The latest Angiulos’ brother died few days ago

And so also all the Angiulos brothers are dead. The latest brother of the Angiulo’s family in fact disappeared at the beginning of this month at the age of 94. Frank died for a heart failure, assured people close to him.

The Angiulos were a group of italian brothers and with their band constituted the local italian mafia in Boston. They had a little office in the North End, real headquarter for all their business.

The clan was particularly powerful during the 60s-80s.

Jerry was the leader of the group. Then there was Donato called americanizing the name “Danny”, Michele called “Mike”, and then Francesco “Frank” the bookkeeper and the one who looked closely at the family’s business.

Children of italian immigrants the Angiulo ran a grocery store in the North End and later they decided to start a criminal organization.

Frank Angiulo the angiulo's brothers died at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Frank lived all his life apart the years spent in prisons, in the corner of the world where he grew up: North End, Boston.

A long life, although sometimes Frank suffered of important illnesses. Once a cancer, another time  heart’s problems.

Frank Angiulo spent 14 years in prison because of racketeering and returned home in 2000.

Frank lived at 95 Prince St.

Francesco his real name but everybody called him Frank, has never participated in violent acts or killed any man. He is described as a “private man” and like someone who “Never hurt anybody”.

This departure according to an attorney close to Angiulo represents  “The closing of a chapter in Boston’s history”.

A lot of differences between the italian mob if compared to the irish one created by Jimmy “Whitey” Bulger.

The structure created by Bulger it seems, didn’t hesitate to create dirty money with every possible illegal business.

The Angiulo in this sense had a code of honor. Cardinale an attorney of the family Angiulo talked largely of the differences between the italian and irish mob with the Globe.

The italian mob tried to keep drug out from North End. Whitey didn’t hesitate to introduce drugs in South Boston.

Although mobsters, Cardinale added that these people loved to seeing the neighborhood safe. They did care for everyone and there wasn’t any kind of violence thanks to them, added the attorney.

But so in what way the Angiulo made money if drugs and other dangerous voices of common organized criminality didn’t interest the family?

Mainly their money arrived from bookmaking and loansharking.
There was also a story of racketeering case and it included brutal murders as well.

The FBI was interested to defeat the local italian mafia and so in 1981 the agents installed a bug in the office of Angiulo where they captured a lot of conversations and later the various brothers were all put in jail.

The local italian mafia was defeated in 1986 when all the brothers Angiulo were convicted.

Their destiny: Michele called “Mike” served three years in prison for gambling and died in 2006 at 79 years.

Donato served 11 years for racketeering and died in may 2009. at 86 years.

Gennaro Angiulo released in 2007 after 24 years of prison for racketeering died in 2009 at 90 years.

During the Angiulo’s era in North End italians were the 70% of population. Now just the 30%.

The area of course is still populated by the Little Italia of Boston with locals I am sure very appreciated: famous restaurants, pastry shops, food shops, but the neighborhood is home also of a lot of college students and young professionals. A young neighborhood.

While the brothers Angiulo were in jail at the end of ’80s, exactly in 1988 The Boston Globe 10929555_421228288050820_5264084193313585513_n 11143680_421228264717489_8379124047041460925_n revealed for the first time that Whitey whitey 12 Bulger was one of the main informants 10929555_421228288050820_5264084193313585513_n 11143680_421228264717489_8379124047041460925_n  of the FBI.

In the 1990s it was revealed during court proceedings that thanks to the help of the informants Whitey Bulger and Flemmi “Rifleman” one of the most important affiliates of Bulger and the Winter Hill Gang, the FBI was in grade to decapitate the Angiulo’s team of brothers.

So the italian brothers tried all their best for proving that Whitey Bulger and the FBI had a corrupted relationship and that the FBI agents maybe as said by the Globe could have taken bribes from Bulger and Flemmi. This fight didn’t bring any good result and the Angiulo stayed in jail.

The interest for Bulger was over when the brothers left jail. Once back home they didn’t mention anymore the irish mobster of South Boston.

Who knows what Frank would have thought of Black Mass….

The brothers Angiulo have always been supportive and close to each others.

Frank once returned home spent most of the time in the old office where the FBI had put the bug in 1981.

He loved to sit in the office and watch some tv. He also enjoyed to driving his two old Cadillacs. When of course he didn’t spend the days sat on the stairs of his house, watching the people passing by and enjoying another new day presented by God.
