Hank Brennan is one of the attorneys of Whitey Bulger.

When the movie Black Mass was launched last week-end the mobster from the Florida prison where he is incarcerated appeared pretty upset with Scott Cooper’s movie, Johnny Depp in the role of Whitey Bulger.

From jail he asked to the attorney Brennan of let know his personal position about the movie and the book written by Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill staffers of the Globe. Something known: Whitey Bulger has never particularly loved the book by the two investigative reporters of the Globe: Black Mass, Whitey Bulger, the FBI and a devil’s deal.

“Johnny Depp might as well have played the Mad Hatter all over again as far as James Bulger is concerned”.

Brennan add, his client hasn’t seen the movie yet considering that Whitey is incarcerated and there is no cable.

It is still unclear if there is a theater in the prison and if in case it would be taken in consideration the projection of Black Mass and if Whitey Bulger would want to see it or just would decline to see portrayed on the screen his criminal life.

“That book and the premise are so deeply based in fiction that it has nothing to do with the real story”.

Brennan on Bulger’s case:

“The biggest tragedy at hand in this case has been that the federal government has continued to try to cover up their own responsibility and liability for the damage and deaths caused by their top-echelon informant program”.

Back with Jimmy Whitey Bulger ‘s story.

 

On the Boston Globe in fact appeared a very interesting news and article written by Shelley Murphy, co-author with Kevin Cullen by Whitey Bulger: America’s most wanted gangster and and the Manhunt that brought him to justice

 

I started to fall in love for this story absolutely one of the most interesting ones when Johnny    started to shooting to Boston. Superb as Whitey Bulger  in the movie adaptation  based on the  book written by Dick Lehr and Gerry O’Neill and called: Black Mass, Whitey Bulger, the F.B.I. and a devil’s deal.

 

 

The defense, Whitey is represented by lawyers Hank Brennan  and James Budreau,  are ready with an appeals court presented this past thursday to overturn Whitey’s conviction. Whitey is in fact 84 years.

The case of Whitey Bulger  is of course pretty heavy, but according to the attorneys something can be done for helping hin.

What exactly?

In the 201 pages of this file of appeal of Whitey’s conviction, attorneys remarked how, according to them, Whitey didn’t get a fair trial because the judge refused to let him tell jurors that many years ago someone had promised him a total immunity for all the possible crimes he could have committed.

According to the attorneys this lack of auto-defense because the judge didn’t permit him to say that to the jurors, deprived constitutionally Whitey to introduce to the court an effective defense and “stripped him of his right to testify about how he was able to avoid prosecution for almost twenty-five years” wrote the attorneys. This file has been sent to the US Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.

It was a federal prosecutors, continues the attorneys in their file,  now deceased who had promised him a total immunity for all possible crimes, of course murder including.

The federal prosecutor said this to Whitey was Jeremiah T.O’Sullivan. He had promised Whitey’s total immunity, because Whitey promised him of protecting him all his life.

Of course, in a way Whitey felt he could act with freedom because constantly protected.

Casper anyway barred the immunity defense and for various reasons. First: there wasn’t any written documentation about this exchange of favors between the two. Just an assertion. Second: even if O’Sullivan had said that and promised it, he hadn’t any authority to saying or doing that.

O’Sullivan was the head of the New England Organized Crime Strike Force, and he died in 2009.

Attorneys insisted that there was this authority for saying or doing that.

Former assistant US attorney Brian T.Kelly, took part of the team prosecuted Whitey Bulger. He added in many
occasions that various judges had offered to Whitey the opportunity to raise an immunity defense prior to trial. So not just one. After all added Brian T.Kelly, Whitey couldn’t think of have the license for killing or other kind of immunity of this sort. Kelly thinks he had failed to take the opportunity to present it.

Attorneys added: “The court ruled that the defense could not raise the immunity defense at trial in any form, including the defendant’s own testimony at trial. This error effected the fundamental fairness of Mr. Bulger’s trial and his convictions should be automatically reversed as a result.”

Jimmy Whitey Bulger was found guilty of 11 murders, including the strangulation of a woman knew too much (I will analyze the various murders very soon) and other crimes like drug trafficking.

Sure one of maybe the most delicate points taken in exam by the prosecutors and attorneys was the relationship between the F.B.I. and Jimmy Whitey Bulger.

For the prosecutors, there was a strong relationship between this governative very important institution and Whitey.
Lot of corruption, a lot of crimes had also seen involved the F.B.I. The facto according to the prosecutors Whitey was a very important informants of the F.B.I. At the same time being the boss of the irish mob a great contradiction. In general in fact, informations of the F.B.I. are little fishes, able to bring the agents to the biggest fishes.

According Bulger’s attorneys it was absolutely false he was an informant. John J.Connolly Jr. to the defense had fabricated Bulger’s informants file for very other purposes.

Sure “The Rifleman” Flemmi haven’t been of great help for Whitey. He testified that yes, they were two informants of the F.B.I. and not from a short period and that they had paid something like 240.000 dollars to Connolly during the years.
The Rifleman Flemmi added that Connolly constantly informed them when some other informants weren’t cooperating for them asking to them of killing various people.

The defense so talked about the important “Systemic corruption existing in the Usa during that period”. Whitey to the defense “Intended to show the systemic corruption existed in the federal government during the 1970s through 1990s and the political and institutional motivations that led Jeremiah O’Sullivan and the Strike Force to provide immunity to James Bulger.”

Attorneys point their finger to the credibility of institution talking of “Unprecedented deals with organized crime figures and murderers in an attempt to insulate themselves from civil liability and cover up their practices.”

The apartment where Charles Gasko, fake identity for Whitey Bulger  spent and lived 16 years in Santa Monica, California, with his long-term companion Catherine Greig alias Carol Gasko, is available for rent.

It is specified that it is possible to rent the Princess Eugenia apartment for 2.950 dollars per month.

Journalist of the Hollywood Reporter tried to reaching the lady owner of the entire complex, but she added she wouldn’t want to confirm or deny the possibility and she is not interested to talk to the media in this phase.

 

The gangster left for good South Boston before to be arrested.

 

It seems that John Connolly  very powerful agent of the F.B.I. of Boston and close friend of Bulger, in pension the years taken in exam  (although Connolly repeats he is innocent) told to Whitey Bulger at some point of leaving Boston because the air was changed. Someone from the F.B.I. in fact had called him for letting him know this news.

Whitey and the actual and last girlfriend Carol Gasko, new identity for Catherine Greig  flied away.

 

 

He didn’t choose anyway an unknown or a secluded place but sunny California and a locality, Santa Monica  the dream of everyone and in particular stars and very rich people.

He had found this apartment where he was happily living without too many problems, walking everyday and enjoying the stunning Santa Monica’s sunset until Osama Bin Laden was captured and killed.

 

After that Whitey lost again his peace because he returned to be the first one to be researched and WANTED on the famous Top Ten List of the F.B.I.

 

 

The F.B.I. would have rewarded everyone for informations involving Whitey with something like 2 millions of dollars. A great amount of money.

A model, Miss Iceland 1974          Anna Bjornsdottir, was living close to this couple. Carol Gasko (Ms Greig) was nice, and she loved to feed poor abandoned cats, a passion they started to sharing, because Anna had this passion  too.

Impossible to believe that in an exclusive locality as Santa Monica some cats can be homeless. The idea is of a very rich and exclusive place where everyone can take care of their own dogs and cats thanks to their money and where poverty doesn’t exist but evidently these abandoned cats were there for a reason. Maybe.

Once Anna returned to Iceland leaving his dear and lovely friends with great melancholy.

Once back home watching one day distractely but not too much the international news, she noticed his two friends from Santa Monica. Not there for promoting a campaign for the cause of poor abandoned cats, but because they were incredibly researched by the special agents of the F.B.I.  

The reward of 2 milliosn of dollars was a great temptation and didn’t let her hesitate for a second although it was born a friendship between them because of Carol Gasko/Grieg and the cats.

Of course Whitey didn’t live closed all the time at home but he loved to go out, wearing always sunglasses and hats for long walks. Although of course he didn’t result the sunniest person of this world (he couldn’t be after all he is a boss) he was accepted, like also the companion. When the news was known by everyone it was incredibly shocking for everyone to discover who the couple Glacko realistically was.

This discovery embarassed a bit Santa Monica’s law enforcement as well.

The agents found in the house more than 800.000 dollars cash, 820.0000 precisely and a real arsenal with 30 weapons.
Beige carpeting and a brick fireplace, the couple seemed to live modestly, without too many pretences.

Whitey’s trial started in South Boston this past june 2013 Whitey Bulger is represented by Hank Brennan . Mr Brennan is working at the appeal of his client at the moment. Whitey has been found found guilty and charged of racketeering, complicity in a lot of murders 19 in total. Two months later the jury found him guilty of 31 of the 32 counts concluding he had participated in the murders of 11 victims. Seven people murders have not included and Bulger  hasn’t been recognized responsible of a murder.

The sentence? Two life terms and five years.

 

 

Johnny Depp is starring in the role of Whitey Bulger  in the biopic movie still unnamed and that I will call Black Mass based on the book of the two former journalists and writers specialized in crime stories involving italian and irish mafia of the Boston Globe, Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill: “Black Mass: Whitey Bulger, the F.B.I. and a devil’s deal“.

Hank Brennan , Whitey Bulger’s attorney working at the appeal for his client arrested on June 22, 2011, on the run for 17 years and wanted for a variety of crimes in South Boston area including different murders, drug trafficking and extortion and caught by FBI agents in California with the long-term companion, Catherine Greig , brought to trail in 2013 receiving two life sentences  and convicted because of money laundering, extortion, weapons offenses, racketeering, etc in a recent phone interview with UPI regarding the various productions going on, added regarding the so called and still unnamed movie Black Mass starring Johnny Depp: “If I ever had a comment about the Johnny Depp movie, I would denounce it as fiction. I think the Johnny Depp movie does a disservice, not only to the public, but it does a disservice to the victims’ families” added with force the attorney.

But where are according to Brennan the biggest errors of this movie?

It seems that the main problem for the attorney is not Johnny Depp but the source where the informations were taken for the realization of the movie: Black Mass the book written by Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill.

The attorney in the phone interview with UPI continued:

“I think it is so unfortunate that Hollywood has decided to produce a movie with Johnny Depp based on the book Black Mass. Now, there is a story and a movie to be told, and there is plenty of information that the public needs to know, but when you filter it through a Hollywood production that is based on a book called Black Mass, what you’re doing is distorting the truth because Black Mass was written in the year 2000 and Black Mass was written by authors who previously wrote a book called The Underboss where they glorified [FBI] agents like John Connolly and John Morris, who we now know were corrupt and involved in cases of murder.

And, so, -continued Brennan- the source of those books was the federal government and the federal government is very keen in disseminating propaganda. They are very good at this part of their business and these local reporters would eat it up because it gave them leverage or a benefit or their own legacy in the story, but most of it was absolute fiction. So, when I read those books, I see how much of it is just inaccurate and lies. And what has happened since 2000 is we have learned so much more. … A film like Black Mass ignores what we learned in the congressional hearings about the systemic [government] corruption. It ignores the 19 trials where we see these families fighting to show that the government was responsible for the loss of their loved ones.”

Brennan says he would prefer to see Hollywood make a version that tells the story responsibly.

Yes this is psychologically true: the city of Boston started to be so excited when the news of a very possible second  Warner Bros production Black Mass apart involving Oscar Prizes Matt Damon and Ben Affleck , born both in Boston was spread in the city. Maybe not the happiest moment for launching a news like that one considering that there is still another production in progress involving Whitey Bulger’s criminal story.

Since there in a way most people are thinking that this second and future Warner Bros production would be potentially stronger than than the one with Johnny Depp.
